I used to
think that everyone expects a busy signal now and then. Nobody told me
that getting new clients to call you is like winning the lottery. You want
to make sure someone is there when they call your number.
Phone lines and
even good answering services are relatively inexpensive. Whatever money you
think you're saving by keeping phone lines to a minimum or not having an
answering service can be lost the minute you lose a phone call.
A few years
ago, I wanted some landscaping done. I was having a hard time choosing
between two landscapers. I called one guy to tell him that he had the job
and got a busy signal. The other landscaper happened to call me twenty
minutes later, so I wound up giving the business to him.
On many
occasions I have called companies listed in the Yellow Pages, got a busy
signal, and moved on to the next listing. It's not as if I thought, "I don't
want to use this company because they don't have enough phone lines." I just
didn't want to wait.
Some businesses
have too few phone lines because they're trying to save money. Others are
just too busy to notice that they need additional phone lines. As your
business grows, you will have more incoming as well as outgoing calls.
You need to
monitor this increase. The moment someone calls to do business with you
is precious. Guard it with your life. If your clients - or prospective
clients - keep getting busy signals, you won't be busy for long.
And - it should
go without saying - always return calls the same day!
