The self-employed tend to have higher levels of job satisfaction than do other workers. Only about one in three (35 per cent) of those who work for others are in the "completely satisfied" category. More than twice as many successful business owners are completely satisfied. Too much stress, a prime candidate for causing job dissatisfaction, is believed to be a major reason.

For one thing they have much less job-related stress than do most workers. Workers who are over-stressed report that they are required to do too much in too little time. For another, their goals are usually more congruent than those of the employed, since the goals of one's employer may not be at all in sync with one's own aims.

Of course being self-employed can be stressful at times. But many business owners say that it is much more stressful working for an employer than for one's own customers or clients. What is riskier: having one source of income as an employee or having many sources of revenue from your hundreds, even thousands, of happy customers?

95 per cent of successful businesswomen (in the self-made millionaire category) indicate that their vocation gives them much satisfaction. Fully 90 per cent are certain that their success is a direct result of their having a passion for their careers. Nearly all (93 per cent) said that loving what they do is an important factor in explaining their high level of economic achievement. Another 6 per cent stated that it was somewhat important and only 1 per cent rated this dimension as unimportant.

By comparison, a nationwide Gallup poll in the US found that more than one-half (55 per cent) of employees have no enthusiasm for their work. Yet enthusiasm is highly contagious. Business owners are leaders and good leaders are those who bring out the best in their employees. If a leader is passionate about his or her job, s/he can excite others to adopt similar emotions, including employees, suppliers and customers/clients.
