Once you've cleared the unnecessary clutter, which you've identified as:

bullet

"It seemed like such a good idea at the time" stuff.

bullet

Stuff that's too expensive to throw out

bullet

Invisible Stuff

bullet

Stuff that has secondary sentimental value and
Stuff you’re keeping for someone else

bullet

Stuff that has to be done, but you just can’t get started.

don’t be fooled by the desire to organize your clutter. It’s a lifetime job—and a fake one at that. Put your legal and financial papers, your birth certificate, and your insurance policies in one place and tell someone where they are in case they need to find something and you’re not there to help them. As for the rest, either get rid of it, or leave it as it is.

For good. Your photographs are all loose in a couple of big boxes? Fine, you know where to find them if you need them. You can pull out the box and look at your pictures out of order with just as much pleasure as if they were organized by date and glued into albums.
