Stuff that's too expensive to throw out: This often overlaps with the
"It seemed like such a good idea at the time" stuff, but the real
reason you hang onto this stuff is not because you ever expect to use it but
because it cost a lot of money. It’s embarrassing to have your eyes
continually fall on a box of expensive software you know you’ll never use or
a great-looking hat you can't bring yourself to wear. Keep your notebook
open and write down each item of Type 2 stuff. After each entry put a date
by which you promise to use it, or write "Toss it," just as you did earlier.
Is this killing you? Do you feel you absolutely cannot
throw this stuff in the trash barrel? I understand perfectly and would never
ask you to do anything so wasteful. That’s why I have a great trick for
getting rid of stuff that’s too good for the trash.
