If you could find someone who really needed your stuff,
who would put it to good use and be delighted and grateful to get it, you
could turn from an overburdened collector into a public benefactor. For this
reason, it’s worth spending some time to find an organization where these
things might be valued and develop a relationship with it.
I found an under-financed library across town for my
books and tapes, and whenever the clutter starts building up in this
category, I send it to that library. Now, instead of feeling like a failure
for never learning Hungarian, I feel that I might have helped somebody.
After all, somebody will want to learn Hungarian one of these days, even if
it isn’t me.
There’s also a hospital that has my opera records in its
recreation room. Somebody might be listening to those records and getting a
lot of pleasure out of them right now. I sent boxes of beautiful clothes I
should never have bought to a women’s shelter. I think those women will look
far better in them than I would have, and now I don’t feel like such a jerk
for buying them. Donating to these organizations puts my follies to good use
and redeems me. It takes a bit of time to find these places, but you only
have to find them once. After that, a phone call will do the job.
