Ask yourself the following questions:
1. Do you have clothes in your closet that haven’t fit you for years?
2. Do you own appliances and gadgets you don’t use?
3. Do you own anything broken that you intend to fix someday?
4. Do you have all the materials for projects you never find the time to
do?
5. Are you planning to have a lawn/garage sale one of these days, but you dread
all the work it will take?
6. Do you have unfinished chores to do, papers to sort, cards to send,
letters to write?
7. Do you save junk mail and catalogs?
8. Do you get calls from people you don’t really want to talk to?
9. Do you have magazines waiting to be read?
If you answered yes to any of these questions you’ve got a problem. And
don’t think you’re going to solve your problem by just sorting out
everything and making big lists. That’s a common myth: "One of these days
I’ll find a place for everything I want to keep, I’ll go through every piece
of mail and through all those catalogues, I’ll just save what I want and
toss out the rest, and as soon as I get time I’ll get around to answering
those letters and phone calls."
Don’t you believe it. You’re never going to get that clutter under
control and you might be very surprised to find out why. You haven’t
accidentally accumulated all that stuff. It’s part of an unconscious plan.
You’ve created the clutter
for a reason.
