What is Change About ?

In the yearly cycle, we have two equinoxes: the period starting from the full moon before each equinox through to the full moon after it is a most important time. It is one of the most powerful detoxification periods. This applies to both the Autumn and Spring equinoxes, when the sun is at a right angle to the earth at the equator, and we have equal day and night, usually around 21st of March and September. At the precise moment of each equinox, there is a complete reversal of the energy through the body.

From the March equinox to the September equinox, energy is moving up the front of the body and down the back, with an opening effect. From the Autumn equinox to the Spring equinox this is reversed, with the energy running up the back and down the front, changing from an open energy picture to a more closed one.

There are important seasonal effects on the body fluids that I think you should take note of. From the Autumn equinox at the end of September through to the Spring equinox at the end of March, the body fluids become thickened and there is less movement, paralleling what is taking place in the environmental energies: we go into a state of semi-hibernation.

Some people who are terminally or seriously ill, and some elderly people, find relief by travelling to warmer countries to be with the sun throughout our winter season. We also put extra strains on ourselves during the winter by eating after the sun has set. The thicker the body fluids have become, the more strongly felt is the desire to sleep and rest at this time of the year. This is another indication of the degree of toxicity.

As mentioned, during the winter period, the movement of energy travels up the back and down the front of the physical body, with a closing effect. This is the season for eating grains and vegetables that grow under the soil, the root crops. These have a more closed, drier energy. We go into semi-hibernation.

When the Spring equinox comes along the energies change, and move up the front and down the back of the body, a dramatic reversal occurring at the precise time of the equinox. This brings a tremendous elimination of toxins from the cells, a complete cleanse. We also change the foods we eat, traditionally sHighing. In the summer, foods that grow rapidly, above the ground, would be consumed, and we cook them 'in the light', i.e. with the lid off the pan. But in the winter months, we eat the foods which grow more slowly, under the ground, and we cook them 'in the dark', with the lid on. It is a real matching of energy, if we eat this way.

An overall way of looking at what I am teaching is to say it is about removing stress from the body. One way to do this would be to bring it into some sort of harmony with the seasons. When the sun sets, your energies go down. In the winter, it does not seem at all natural or good for the body to be eating after dark. If you look at your eating patterns in the winter, do you notice that you eat late, driving home in a rush, and then not feel too good in the morning, in terms of energy?

I feel that pollution levels are interfering with the natural equinox changeovers for us, which is not surprising when we remember that the skin is the largest organ of elimination and the lungs (strongly affected by air pollution) are second to the skin in this respect. I have noticed that people seem to be more tired at these equinoxes than used to be the case. This tiredness indicates that the toxicity needs to be eliminated to outside the body. I am also finding that there is an increase in CFS/ME and in mental level illnesses following closely after the equinoxes.

In Chinese medicine, the Water Element is in Winter and the associated organs are the kidneys and the bladder. When people have misplaced fluids and thickened, contracted lymph, fear is a notable emotion. The two organs do not have to be diseased, but they are challenged, and have a reciprocal relationship with the emotion of fear. When any imbalance in an Element has been a part of the case history for two years or longer, the Chinese say that the Water Element must also be out of balance. We can be pretty certain that everyone we see has a Water Element imbalance, and therefore a fear imbalance.

We are brought up to be influenced by fear, and this fear causes much of what we find manifesting around us. If children were taught to take a wholistic, reasoning approach to situations, both at home and during their education, the emotion of fear would come back towards being more in balance with the other emotions.

We need to recognize what is happening and to monitor symptoms, otherwise we will not appreciate why treatments do not seem to be working as expected. The traditional Chinese 'doctors' know that they have to take their patients through the two equinox changes each year and that, if this is done successfully, their health will be good subsequently.
