The coach does not produce the solutions. Coaches are sources of help but that does not always mean that we know more about some subject than you. It means we know about helping processes. Sometimes we help you discover what you already know – and perhaps better ways to use this. There will also be times we can serve as resources, in the form of giving information, advice, instruction, or a referral. Training, tutoring and instruction is not really a big part – so don’t expect coaching to include business consulting nor to be a way to increase your technical competence or understanding. Some of the most common examples of coaching conversations include:

Counseling focuses on getting past a block and typical outcomes including:

bulletGetting underneath problems to their causes
bulletInsights and shifts in attitude
bulletCommitment to self-sufficiency

Mentoring focuses on planning and taking responsibility for development including:

bulletDeveloping political savvy (sensitivity to an organisation’s culture)
bulletPersonal networking and managing one’s career
bulletIncreased learning pace

Questioning focuses on achieving personal discovery via insights and solutions, including:

bulletIdentifying what’s right for you
bulletExploring solutions & decision making
bulletQuestions about values and goals
