You can successfully coach your boss to make a difference - often without
that person ever realizing!
Imagine that your boss requests you to undertake a particular project but
doesn’t have the skills to gain your buy-in. Here are a few questions that could
be adapted for use with your boss that would dramatically increase the
probability of success.
· what specifically is the outcome you or others
desire?
· how will we measure the success of the project?
· what is the timeframe?
· how achievable do you believe this to be within
this timeframe?
· how important is this project in comparison to
my other projects?
· how strong is your underlying reason for the
completion of this project?
· what causes it to be strong?
· what ideas and possibilities have you already
considered?
· what other possibilities would you like me to
consider
· who would you like me to involve?
· who else could possibly help?
· how can we gain their commitment to helping?
· what resources do you believe I will need?
· are you prepared to allow me to be accountable
for making this happen?
Guiding your boss through such a questioning process could result in a number
of outcomes:
· you could gain lots of useful information that
makes it easier to complete the project
· your boss realises that the project is not as
important as originally anticipated
· your boss gains increased clarity about the way
forward
