Energy Detox: for improved health
The brain
seems to have an evolutionary bias towards pessimism - unhappy,
pessimistic, vigilant negativism may have helped our ancestors maintain an
environmentally adaptive "ready to defend" posture in order to survive in
a hostile environment.
We
all experience the impacts of an increasingly heartless world of
alienation, disconnection, depression, failed and often abusive
relationships, violence, discrimination, environmental
pollution, and an accelerating life pace that leaves us too busy trying to
stay alive to have the time to reflect on the joy of being alive.
The heart
is the most powerful muscle in the human body but even it can be strained
and torn by the pressures applied by a stressed and stressful brain. There is
plenty of evidence now as to the power of the heart to provide the balance
that prevents or reduces many different kinds of health problems. An
illuminating book about this area is Dr Paul Pearsall's "The Heart's
Code".
The heart
is an organ of connection and seeks interrelationship. Psychologists now
know that humor can be one of the best ways to diffuse interpersonal
conflicts and to experience and express intimate connection. Humor,
therefore, is one of the tools that the heart uses and here are some
things psychologists have learned about humor that are also habits of the
heart.
· The
heart constantly is trying to teach us to pay attention to life’s
"uplifts" and that we need the energy of other hearts that comes from
forming new bonds. Humor has been shown to be one of the most effective
ways of teaching so, when we laugh with someone, we are teaching and
learning with them about the ups and downs of daily life.
· The
heart seeks lasting connections, abhors disconnection, and cannot laugh
when it is losing a connection. Research shows that lack of humor and
shared laughter is one of the earliest and most predictive signs of a
failing intimate relationship.
· The
heart is inclusive in its oscillating nature and teaches us to be aware of
both sides of any life experience. Persons with a sense of humor can see
several sides of an issue and are able to "break out of a perceptual set"
and think and feel creatively. This ability to tune in to the heart’s
sense of balanced humor allows us to see problems coming from any side. As
author Jeremiah Abrams writes, "The one-sided get blind-sided."
· Through
its energy, the heart draws other hearts to it and is drawn to other
hearts. Unlike the brain’s sardonic humor that can drive people away,
healthy humor, the kind that leads to strengthened immunity, healing, and
cardiovascular health, is "attracting humor" that narrows social
distances.
· The
heart enjoys making other hearts "feel good." Healthy humor makes everyone
feel better, but the brain’s humor is often intended to disparage others
to make itself look good.
· Unlike
the brain, the heart knows that it alone cannot be "the mind" but that
together with the brain and body it forms a Mind of which it is a key
part. By its nature, the heart is a partner seeking to "be a part of"
rather than "in charge of." By contrast, the dominating brain’s humor is
often a "control device" it uses to assume superiority over other brains.
· The
heart loves and uses humor to express love. The brain’s humor is often
used to express its dislike of another person.
· The
partnership-oriented heart gets along well with the trickster and loves
surprises, incongruity, and anything that annoys the arrogant brain. The
brain’s humor is defensive.
· When
the heart is in healthy energetic balance, its rhythm is steady and the
energy it sends attracts others and conveys its healthy state to their
hearts. Researchers now know that easy, honest, connecting laughter is a
key sign of health.
· Humor
is one of the best ways of avoiding aggression, releasing tension,
reducing anxiety, and enhancing immune function, all of which are healthy
states for and of the heart. One of the best preventers of heart disease
is humor.
· When
the brain is quieted, the heart is free to laugh. During laughter, there
is a decrease in the flow of blood to the prefrontal and temporoparietal
cortical areas of the brain, suggesting that the positive emotional state
induced by humor puts the brain momentarily at rest.
All of
the above positive effects of humor require heartfelt compassionate
laughter, not mocking, disparaging laughter. Those moments we
are laughing the hardest are likely to be those when we are the most
directly tuned in to our heart’s code. At these times, we are suspending
the brain’s often oppressive pressuring control and egoistic sense of self
and connecting with the world on a heart level.
