Energy Detox: for improved health

(Note: this is a long page, designed to be easy to copy and paste.)

All bodies require sunlight - as well as air, water and food - to live. Dr Richard Wurtman, Professor of Edocrinology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, states that wavelengths of light are similar to vitamins and minerals since humans appear to require a broad spectrum of frequencies for physical, emotional and mental well-being.

Most sunlight enters through the eyes while the rest is absorbed through the skin and plays a vital role in the prevention of illness. As it enters the eyes and skin, each wavelength may have a specific role to play in our mindbody functioning. A lack of sunlight can lead to illness, just as a lack of food, air, or water does.

Dr Wurtman states that light ignites the cellular metabolism. If we restrict or alter our light exposure too much, the body simply cannot run properly. Generally, the competence of immune system is lowered in the winter: fertility is lower, fatigue increases, and overall levels of health decline. Away from the tropics (with its all-year-round equal  12 hours of day and night), winter's darker and shorter daylight hours alter the body's natural internal rhythms.

Our requirements for sunlight or for light healing probably vary according to our mood, the season of the year, our constitutional type and our overall level of health and vitality. The entire spectrum of natural sunlight is essential for optimal functioning of all living cells in plants, animals and humans. Sunlight consists not only of light within the visible spectrum but also components within ultraviolet and infrared spectra. Infrared light is associated with healing while ultraviolet is associated with tanning. Plant growth is stimulated by infrared light while the blue end of the spectrum encourages blossoming.

Sunlight is the only type of light that is optimal or normal. Virtually all our natural light comes from sunlight's energy waves. These have no mass but do exert very slight pressure: just outside the atmosphere this is 1 kilogram per square kilometre (2.2 lbs per 0.6 sq mile) - enough to propel a space sailship!

The sun's electromagnetic (e-m) energy waves differ according to their wavelength but all travel at 300,000 km (186,000 miles) a second. Sunlight, including infrared radiation and ultraviolet light (UV) forms only 0.001 per cent of the range (spectrum) of the sun's e-m radiation. Although we call it "white", it is actually colorless. Starting with the highest energy and shortest waves (0.0001-nanometer wavelength - a nanometer or nm being one-thousandth of a meter) - and progressing to the lowest energy and longest (over 10,000m or 32,810 wavelength) the sun's e-m spectrum includes:

Each of the visible colors is not just a single wavelength but is comprised of a broad range of wavelengths that appear to us as bands of color. The sun's rays consist of a rainbow of colors within and beyond the visible spectrum, broken into approximately 700 band widths (or wavelengths) within the visible spectrum, ranging primarily from 290 nanometers to 990 nanometers (nm). For example, green is comprised of 70 different wavelengths within the range of 490-560nm.

Light's wavelengths are absorbed differently by the blood's red pigment (hemoglobin), by the skin's brown pigment (melanin), by yellow bile pigments in the blood or skin, and by other colored substances such as plant pigments like carotenes in our skin and eyes. Hemoglobin travelling in red blood cells in the skin's blood vessels absorbs blue and green light and reflects red light. Melanin, in cells called malanocytes, absorbs most light, especially towards the blue end of the spectrum, but is particularly good at absorbing UV.

All artificial light is abnormal and a far second best. While artificial lighting enables us to read and work without the benefits of sunlight, it can also profoundly affect our body's immune and nervous systems. The various wavelengths have clear biological differences. For example, blue light may be calming and red stimulating. If a light's color balance is lacking or over represented in one particular color, this can affect health. This is why some people say light's colors are like vitamins. We can take this analogy further with food and light in general, because just as we can have too little or too much food, so too we can suffer from light starvation or "mal-illumination" or light overdose.

We can actually receive a harmful dosage of incandescent, fluorescent and halogen lights of the wrong or improper spectral distribution different from that necessary for health. For example, exposure to yellow light (from all incandescent, normal fluorescent and halogen light bulbs) can overstimulate an individual's nervous system, causing them to experience increased tension and eye strain.

In addition, glass prevents us from getting the full benefits of sunlight. Such modern realities as spending too much time indoors, the use of tinted lenses in reading glasses, sunglasses and contacts, as well as tinted glass and plastic windows and even smog restricts the quantity and quality of light that enters our eyes. Because of these lifestyle factors, many people suffer from light starvation.

There is more than enough research showing that light is one of the most potent tools for mindbody healing. Light, composed of both electrical and magnetic energy, may also be the "missing link" between the emerging conceptualizations of quantum healing and subtle energy therapies. Some working in this new field are finding that using both sound and light - and sometimes even motion - can make a bigger difference than just using sound or light alone. Hopefully there will be much more research to establish both the theory and practice of this exciting new field.
