When we think of sunlight, we imagine it coming to us in
straight lines, like the shafts of sunlight in a leafy glade. As we walk into the sunlight it can also dazzle us because the
light is unpolarized and arrives at all angles. But if a thin grid of
bars is placed between the source and the eyes, the Sun's glare disappears because the light has been polarized: only rays
of one plane are now reaching the eyes. Some sunglasses rely on this
principle to protect the eyes from glare. The discovery of polarized light
is by no means new – any electromagnetic radiation can be polarized.
Two scientists, John Stephenson from
Surrey in southeast England and Dr Marta Fenyo of Budapest, have
discovered how to exploit this phenomenon of polarized light for health.
They use a combination of polarized light and full-spectrum lighting,
which aims to mimic the frequencies of natural sunlight. In the UK,
Ministry of Defence trials on this Virtual Daylight system discovered that
it could produce a 70 percent drop in headaches, eye fatigue, and VDU
vision problems.
But that is only part of the story. Dr Fenyo had discovered many years
before that polarized light can also boost immune system responses and
cure conditions such as leg ulcers. At the National Institute of
Radiobiology in
Budapest, Dr Fenyo and a colleague, Dr Tamara Kubasova, tested polarized
light on mice by an indirect method. They took some serum from
tumour-bearing mice, which had been successfully treated with polarized
light, and injected the serum into other mice with tumors. The injected
mice recovered, proving that the polarizing effect could be transferred
simply via the serum.
Encouraged, Dr Fenyo tried a different technique: this time with dogs
dying of cancer. She took some blood from the animals, irradiated it with
polarized light and then reinjected the blood into the animals. There was
a dramatic reduction in tumor size, accompanied by a remarkable increase
in alertness in the dogs. The list of ailments successfully treated with
polarized light continues to increase: mastitis in cattle, acne,
sports injuries, psoriasis. Altogether some 20,000 patients
have received her polarized light therapy.
A version of this technique uses a tool called the Bioptron, which uses
visible incoherent polarized (VIP) light. The polarized light emitted by
the Bioptron device activates and regenerates the body's cells. This
boosts the immune system and helps the body to rebalance and heal itself. The Bioptron is used for
treating conditions such as acne, herpes simplex, and external hemorrhoids.
It has proved extremely effective in the treatment of severe burns.
During treatment, light, comprising visible cold light and part of the
infrared spectrum, is shone on the affected area for between two to six
minutes. Treatment should be administered once or twice daily until the
condition improves.
The light works by instigating a sort of chain reaction. It increases the
activity of the cell membrane, which in turn boosts cell production of
enzymes and energy reserves. At the same time, the body tissues become
capable of absorbing more oxygen. This results in stimulation of the
immune system and a strengthening of immune responses.
