1.
Saying no is a career killer.
The real killers are way beyond your boss's control - like the economy or
company performance. However, violating someone's trust or failing to delivery
on a commitment: those are killers!
2. Saying yes, when we know it's silly or
dysfunctional, is part of the game. We do it in the name of career
advancement.
That quid pro quo disappeared long ago. Your boss's job is in as much
jeopardy as yours. "Play the game" occasionally because you care about the
people involved - because you know they'll be there for you when it counts.
But not to advance your career.
3. Staying connected with networks is important.
Saying no to a teammate takes me out of the Learning/Sharing Power Loop.
If you adopt the indirect approach to saying no, you will find that the
new dialogue actually enhances relationships and the value you bring to the
network.
4. My boss will never accept no. I'm stuck in a no-win
situation.
The first part may or may not be true. The second part describes a choice
you alone have made.
