Myth #1: Stress is an automatic response that just happens.

Reality: Stress is a physiological response. Whether or not the stress response is activated in a given moment is determined by the way you choose to respond to it. You can learn to respond in new ways. This will inevitably result in enhanced productivity in all aspects of your life.

Myth #2: Stress responses are caused by external events and people.

Reality: If this was true then we would all be victims of our environment - like feathers at the mercy of the wind. Stress is not caused by external events but rather by the way we choose to interpret them. One man about to get a tooth pulled at the dentist gives it no thought, while another cannot sleep the night before. Someone about to parachute out of a plane is petrified, while his friend is ecstatic.

Myth #3: Stress reactions are out of my control. I can’t change how I respond.

Reality: When you think you "can’t", you have programd yourself to fail. The way you react to stress can become a conditioned response. The good news is that what has been learned can be unlearned and then replaced with better choices to manage stress in a more productive manner.

Myth #4: If I don’t feel stress, I won’t be able to achieve as much.

Reality: If you learn to free yourself from the non-productive aspects of stress, you will have increased energy available to direct towards achieving your goals. You will be able to function with a greater sense of flow, rhythm and ease. When your car is in tune, you get better gas mileage.
